Unbroken Movie Preview: The Story of Louis Zamperini

My wife has been on my case for months to read Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption. The book, by Laura Hillenbrand (author of Seabiscuit), tells the story of Louis Zamperini, a runner who competed in the 5000m at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. The book tells the story of his running career as well as his experiences as a soldier during WWII (he was shot down, stranded in a lifeboat, and was taken as a POW by the Japanese). I’ve been meaning to read Unbroken for awhile now, but am a bit ashamed to admit that I’ve become so accustomed to reading books on Kindle that I haven’t overcome the hurdle of my wife’s hardcover paper copy (just bought the Kindle version, so no more excuses!).

Steve Magness just Tweeted a preview of the forthcoming movie that has been adapted from the book (the preview is narrated by Tom Brokaw and aired during coverage of the Winter Olympics). Looks fantastic!

  1. it’s a great book, if you’re into that sort of thing. i am, so i loved it. i hope the movie is half as good

  2. One of the finest books I’ve ever read. Mr. Zamperini is a hero and inspiration. Makes me feel kind of silly whenever a nagging running injury is getting me down!

  3. Louis Zamperini’s story is nothing short of amazing. Read the book over a year ago and I’m excited to see the movie when it comes out. Saw this trailer yesterday during the Olympics XC relay and called my wife to come see it because she’s currently reading the book.

  4. Brad Patterson says:

Very cool, I am just about to start reading the book (after hearing about it on Trail Runner Nation podcast). Hopefully the movie stays true to the original story.

  5. The book is incredible – hardly plausible if you were to tell me it was fiction. With the Coen brothers writing and Ms. Jolie directing, something will really have to go wrong for this not to land some Oscar nominations. The son of one of my friends was up (and favored early) for the role of Zamperini so I’m bummed he didn’t land the part…

  6. I LOVED the book, I hope you do too! The preview of the movie looks great, I just hope they do the book, and his life, justice.
