Greatness: Awesome Nike Commercial

Like many people, I’ve spent the last two weeks soaking up as much of the Olympic coverage as I can. As someone who rarely watches television (we dropped cable several years ago and have not looked back!), the Olympic experience has reacquainted me with the “commercial break.” I could live without the vast majority of commercials, though as a blogger I now understand the necessity of advertising to help pay the bills, and I’ve actually enjoyed some of the ads featuring Olympic athletes.

Of all of the commercials I’ve seen, one in particular made me stop and say “that was awesome.” I’ve shared it below, enjoy!

    The Greatness series is fantastic!

    Here’s another good one.

  2. I thought that they would morph the kid into a fast super trim runner. That would create unrealistic expectations and propagate the myth that running alone (and Nike shoes) can help you loose weight/become fitter. Glad they didn’t go that route.

  3. Nicole Lacoste says:

thanks for the heads up on that! love it!

  4. Samuel Hartpence says:

This is by far and away my favorite commercial ever (Joan Benoit Nike Commercial):

  5. What I think would be awesome to see is another Nike commercial during the Rio Olympics with the same kid fitter, learner, faster. A lot is possible in 4 years.

    • Jamie P Tierney says:

4 years from now that kid will be on insulin therapy

      • Pete Larson says:

I prefer to think that the commercial shows a kid who is trying to take control of his health by starting to run. I know a lot of people, myself included, who have done so. Pretty depressing outlook you have….

        • Jamie P Tierney says:

Sorry to be such a hater. However I look upon my outlook as realistic not pessimistic. 12 years old and 100 lbs over. I can’t even begin to list the myriad of social problems that creates such a situation. I am not a gifted athlete and must strive for what little I have. If he is still striving to improve his health and life 6 month from now then I will give him some applause.

Until then here is where I go for inspiration and to see greatness that anyone can achieve with hard work and discipline.

          • Pete Larson says:

Greatness is a kid trying to turn his life around, I need no more inspiration than that.

          • From what I have read. This kid is just an actor, He had to stop on the first take to get sick.. He represents a major issue in this country… childhood obesity.. If he keeps with it and gets into shape it is a great story.. Until then there is nothing inspirational about it. Many people start out to get into shape only to give up. But if this commercial inspires even one person to get into shape, it’s a success.

  6. Alex Bridgeforth says:

Sounds quite a bit like, “Find your Strong”, hmmm…

  7. Westie Magnuson says:

Ya this has probably been my favorite commercial too.

  8. But nothing beats my all time favorite running ad: “NIKE naked running camp”
    do a search on youtube

  9. Caitlin Chock says:

this is a good one…awesome message. BUT…the only things i’d have to change is the j-word. sorry, we’re runners! ;) hehe

  10. Jamie P Tierney says:

That add is revolting. I don’t see any greatness, just a fat slob. That kid is endemic of everything that is wrong with out lazy vidiot society today.

What is so great about being 100 lbs overweight and then plodding down a road for 1/4 mile????? He is not like a soldger who lost a leg in Iraq but continues to run on prosthesis.

    Here is some greatness

This type of media always provokes…it is advertising so i guess it is doing its job. Here is an interesting read

Nathan does not jog or run….but maybe he will now and be a messenger. would love to see a 6 month follow up. He needs to fix what he eats and get rid of all the simple carbs, fast fats, and processed stuff as the cornerstone of his living if he is to succeed. I am a doc in West Virginia so see this daily.
