Shoe Preview: Saucony Peregrine Lightweight Trail Shoe

Update 6/15/2011: Just posted my own full review of the Saucony Peregrine.

Just got an email from a reader (thanks Rod!) alerting me to a new lightweight trail shoe set to be released by Saucony in 2011. The Saucony Peregrine is a trail shoe that shares a number of characteristics with the red hot Saucony Kinvara (read my Saucony Kinvara review here). According to an article on “The Future of Shoes” on, the Peregrine “is a 10-ounce trail runner with an aggressive outsole and a 4mm heel-toe drop.” It’s great to see Saucony continuing on with the lightweight, low drop shoe design that they introduced with the Kinvara. Details on the Peregrine are scanty right now, but there is a bit of info posted on the Running on Empty blog. In the meantime, here’s a picture of the Peregrine that Rod passed along:

  1. Thanks for the info, I trail run in Kinvara’s now and honestly thought you could not make a better shoe. May have spoken too soon. Will anxiously await their release.

well, i’ve was given a pair of kinvaras for my B-day, which is my second pair as i took back my first after knee pain, and i’m planning on giving this pair another shot, very slowly. having said that i did some balancing in these shoes along with my solomon xa 3d ultra pros and then sanuk and then barefeet, and the amount of cushion under the knivara made it almost impossible to balance with out serious work! like a shape up?? ouch! do you know if the peregrine will be less under the foot? trail shoes should be a bit closer to the ground, kinvaras are not.

    • Pete Larson says:

Not sure about the Peregrine. If you want something firmer and closer to the
ground, the Mizuno Wave Universe or Saucony Grid Type A4 might be better
choices for road shoes, and I have heard good things about the NB MT101 as a
Trail shoe. You will probably alse like the New Balance Minimus shoes – the
Road version is very firm, and the Trail rides very close to the ground with
only a 4mm drop from heel to forefoot.

Thanks for the response i’ve tried both the others you mentioned, both great just not completely trail oriented. i really like your reviews and website. i was just wondering have you ever reviewed any salomon shoes? i’m not trying to sell anything but those xa 3d ultra pros i mentioned are amazing in feel and comfort and when i put one of those on and a kinvara on the other foot i can’t tell whether or not the salomon has an difference in heel drop and the salomon certainly, feels, like it rides lower.

        • Pete Larson says:

I haven’t reviewed any Salomon shoes unfortunately – hopefully I get to try
          them out at some point.

  3. A review of the Peregrine here:
Unfortunately it has the same arch support as the Kinvara.
