Update 2/23/2010: I have now own and have posted a full review of the Brooks Green Silence.
Just a quick post to announce that the Brooks Green Silence racing shoe is now available for purchase on the Brooks Running website. Here’s the description from Brooks:
“Make an eco-statement with the Green Silence racing flat. Each and every part in this fast, groundbreaking shoe has a sustainable element, including soy-based inks and recycled materials. And in this case, “green” goes hand-in-hand with the great performance you expect from Brooks. The Green Silence helps you take responsibility, and first place—with good karma to spare. Weight: 6.9 oz.“
I’ve been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Green Silence, and not just because it’s one of the most environmentally friendly shoes ever made. The Brooks Green silence is a lightweight racing shoe, and at 6.9 oz with a supposedly minimalist feel (including a relatively low heel, per Zombierunner, and now confirmed to me by Brooks – heel-toe drop is only 8mm), fits right into my preferred running shoe profile. I’m also a fan of the flashy red and yellow color combo. I don’t have a pair yet, but you can bet I will be getting one in the not too distant future.
Below is a rundown of the “green” elements found in the Green Silence (via Brooksrunning.com):
- BioMoGo, the world’s first-ever biodegradable midsole for running shoes.
- 75% of the shoe’s materials are post-consumer recycled.
- Biodegradable insole and collar foams.
- Laces, gillies, and reinforced webbing are 100% post-consumer recycled.
- Water-based adhesives are used throughout.
- All dyes and colorants are non-toxic.
- Packaging is 100% post-consumer recycled.

Cool ~ I wonder if I would like them? They are racing flats meaning not for long training runs right?
I recently bought a pair of Nike Lunarracers which are racing flats and have taken them on some long training runs but no more than 15 miles and they hold up pretty good. I’m really hoping that the Brooks have a wider towbox than the Nikes though. The Nike’s are really narrow I’m ordering these shoes soon really excited to try them out for a half marathon later this month.
I wore Lunaracers for a bit as well, and also found them to be a bit
narrow. Just got my Green Silence this week and the toebox feels much
wider. Hope to take a test run this weekend.
