I ran through all three of my pregnancies, but I also learned the hard way that you can indeed do too much and during my second pregnancy, I ended up with a stress fracture in my pelvis that took about a year to heal postpartum.

But I learned a lot from that experience and I did a ton of physical therapy and learned about the importance of retraining the pelvic floor.

During my third pregnancy, I was able to run until 32 weeks and then I stopped for fear of re-stress fracturing my pelvis. But I was right back out there 2 weeks postpartum and never had any trouble returning.

I had that third baby two years ago and since then I have started using kettlebells. I have worked up to swinging a #60 bell, and I fell like it has made my pelvic floor so incredibly strong. I run and lift and even jump on the trampoline with my kids without leaking urine, and I attribute it to using the heavy weight to strengthen my pelvic floor and hips.

So, I agree that running during pregnancy is definitely achievable, but it takes more than just putting in miles.

My wife ran through all three of her pregnancies. She wasn’t training for a marathon or any type of race but it was steady physical activity for her.

s she got closer to her due date, running became more like a fast walk. She adapted as needed without doing any harm to her or any of the babies.

She also had regular conversations with her doctor about running while pregnant. It was cretainly a day to day type of thing.

Sarah brings up some great points and some ideas for women who are thinking about running while pregnant.
