thank you for posting that. I live in San Antonio, TX. Sounds like BoCO AT is a great shoe for snow/cold weather/icy roads. Helps to know that my feet may be melting in them in this weather.:) If anyone else has suggestions on trail shoe that does well in heat (but also rough/rocky terrain here in TX), I’d appreciate that.

If Newton comes out with this same shoe with breathable mesh, it just might be the perfect shoe for me.

No, he ran in them once and hated them :)

I was hopeful they would be good for snow covered pavement (I’m in Rochester as Craig Uffman is) and then transition into a late winter/early spring trail shoe.

Much of Peter’s review holds true for me…They definitely keep my feet warm, have plenty of toe room and feel good in the heel and nice grippy lugs for gnashing crusty ice.

But I am definitely struggling with the forefoot lugs. The seem to be placed right under the front of my arch (not sure if that is the correct location for them) and thusly seem to push me back onto my heel more than encourage me forward.

My non-winter typical shoe is a Kinvara 3, but I also run in NB MT1010, Kinvara TR. I understand they probably won’t be a good fit for a road shoe. Unfortunately, I feel them even on packed snow (Rochester Riverwalk) … just not sure if Newton’s are for me.

The other shoe that has worked really well for me in the snow this winter is the Skechers GoRun Ultra. Lots more cushion than the Newtons, but the soft lugged sole really seems to handle the snow well.

After reading your review, I ordered two pairs of Newtons, the Boco AT and the Energy. I have been running in Motion and Distance for the last two years. This comment is about the Boco AT.

I received the Boco AT this week and ran in them on two 10Km runs on rolling roads, some of which were covered with about 1-2 inches of hardpacked snow and some of which we cleared. My second run particularly consisted of several miles on snow-covered roads. I ran in sub-zero wind chill.

My main interest in these was in finding a solution for running in the snow. In three years of running here in Rochester NY, I’ve not found a good solution for snow-covered roads. The snow has defeated me at times by robbing me of traction. I’ve used Yak Trax but those are best on long patches of icy roads or trails.

The Boco AT provide outstanding traction on snowy roads. I had no problem maintaining my normal easy range when running on snow. They will certainly replace Yak Trax on my runs unless there’s mostly ice. But, as you said, I took a pounding on long stretches of cleared roads. To be clear, on a three-mile stretch of cleared road, I was not bothered by the hard ride at first, but by the third mile I found myself looking for snow to run on. Short stretches are no problem.

I expect I will only use the Boco AT this winter when the roads are mostly snow-covered OR when I head out to trails. They seem to be optimized for surfaces that give more than asphalt.

Have mostly run in Merrell MixMasters for the last year+ (also Inov8 Trailroc 255s). By comparison, these have much better traction, more cushion, more shoe underfoot, and are still light. A great winter trail shoe.

That would make sense, this would not be a great summer shoe

My wife and I were at Newton Labs last week and they said another version of BoCo AT is coming out in the summer that will be more breathable and will not keep the feet from overheating. Maybe more mesh like on the Gravity. Not sure… They did not give a lot a detail.

Thanks Heather! Apparently they didn’t apply the Christmas color combo to the women’s version :)
