I was also running on Sunday in VT & had petty much the same experience as you. I made the decision on shoes a couple days in advance and opted for the Saucony A5 w/ a twist. I filled the drainage holes in the forefoot w/ an adhesive ( for 2 reasons- rain & I get rocks and sticks caught in them.) it worked for the most part, but after 26 miles your going to get your feet wet. My wife & actually talked to a Saucony rep at the expo about the concerns over the drainage holes.

Keep feeding us your knowledge. I decided 2 1/2 months ago to run Vermont because of your posts. I look forward to hearing about your next running adventure.

I’ve run VCM and although I love Burlington, I’m not a fan of all the turns on the course, especially the winding neighborhoods from 16-22. A note on the Saucony Fastwitch. The drains in the bottom of the shoes also let in fine sand. Wore mine out on Saturday for a run along the Maine coast (Wells to York and back), it included a run along the beach in Ogunquit, ME. After a mile along the beach I had to stop and empty my shoes, sand poured out. The drains had allowed sand to fill my shoes more than just a little kicked up here and there. There must have been 1/4 cup of sand in there! Who knew?!

Can I offer my advice on your fall plan? Stick with the road marathon. You have a nice base built up over the spring to work off of into the fall. Switching back and forth between trail and road racing can take a toll and I have found (after nearly 40 years of learning the hard way) when doing that I never do really well at either. Take a few weeks to recover and then build up into the fall and go for that PR! Good luck whatever you decide!

I like it, very simple. No average pace in real-time, but it gives you mile splits when you complete each mile. I have it display current pace and distance and accuracy is good.

I ran the VCM this year too, it was my second marathon and I PRed by over 16 minutes. I was initially worried about the cold and windy conditions but I once I got warmed up I was pretty comfortable. I ran with the merrel bare access 2 and while they were soaked they never felt waterlogged

Yeah, on that last 20 miler I honestly was doubting I could even finish a marathon :) Spring marathons are a big risk for me for that reason.

I’m thinking about your weather woes during your training as I am recovering from the first real warm and humid run of the year that hit me like a ton of bricks. A sudden warm spring day with no heat acclimatization time can really throw you.

You ran a really nice race. And I am feeling a bit jealous that you can have crappy training and still pull out great numbers–there’s some natural talent in those legs, clearly!

It seems like my most enjoyable runs have been in the Samson. Thinking about wearing that or checking out The One for future races. Was it mostly your training and execution that helped you run well, or did the shoes play some role?
