Thanks Mark! I owe you a response to your emails – camping in northern NH right now so will catch up when I can.

John,

Thanks for the comment! I’ve seen the change in position that RW took, long overdue if you ask me. Wrote about it in my book.

I’ll have to get a copy of your book. Newton’s 1935 books was one of the most enjoyable running books I have ever read!

I bet you won’t post this comment

I was wondering if your book has any exercises or conditioning that is prescribed and jut just different brace or another brace for the feet like a shoe-orthotic.

Doctors don’t seem to know how to restore but many know how to put more braces like motion control shoes, orthotics, arch inserts, canes, walkers, wheelchairs until you are bedridden.

Do you talk about how to strengthen the muscles that resist the impacts which I call the landing muscles, the spring suspension system muscles or the pronation supination cuff muscles?

If you like the sound of Arthur’s wisdom, I can guarantee you would be amazed to read what an astonishing life he led! Check out my biography of the great man: ‘Tea With Mr Newton’ published in 2010. Available as an old-fashioned regular book, or as an e-book, via amazon, etc. Or check it out at my site: http://www.robhadgraft.com

I’m half way through, and am amazed an impressed with your thorough research balanced by an easy-to-read format.

I don’t get much into specific exercises in my book, but I am very much an advocate for strengthening rather than bracing. In fact, the is an entire chapter on what I feel are problems with the pronation control paradigm with shoes.

Much of the conversation going on between runners today seems to boil down to what lessons we glean from the changes that occurred in the ’70s, and your analysis is really thought-provoking. By the way, Runner’s World recently stopped classifying shoes based on level of pronation-control:
