i found this great interview with a super masters runner who was switched to flexible racing flats and also trains bare foot on grass.

this is kind of back to the future because Percy Cerutty use to train his boys barefoot on grass and sand and Arthur Lydiard recommended switching away from running ‘BOOTS’ to racing flats years ago, see interview [about 1996] http://runwitharthurlydiard.bl
PS just got a pair of the retro Nike Elite shoes and will be road testing them soon.
the shoes are about the same weight as my nike free’s.

I don’t think (could be wrong) that heel padding came into the scene until the ’70’s. At least as far as runners go. It was about the time Nike made their intital rise.
