The Value of Midsole Width?

I'm curious about this looking at the difference between my old Mirages and my current Bare Access 2's.  On the Mirage, there is nearly 1/8" or so extra midsole width on all sides of the toebox.  On my BA2's, the midsole is about as wide as my foot.

Is there a benefit to either one?

You can see the difference below:

  • I suppose you could argue that a wider midsole provides a more stable surface, but the drawback is that it creates a bigger lever to force you into pronation quickly at contact. Of all shoes, I find the fit of Merrells to be best on my feet.
  • That's the answer I was assuming.  Just thought I'd ask.  I seem to remember reading an article about midsole flare years ago.  Can't remember the contents of it, though.
