Ryan Hall in Slow Motion from the 2010 Boston Marathon

Two of my students went down to Boston on Monday and filmed a good chunk of the marathon for me in slow motion. Here’s a video to whet your appetite – Ryan Hall is most definitely a midfoot striker, and what a thing of beauty that stride is! This video was shot at 300 frames/second with a Casio Exilim EX-F1 digital camera (true slow motion).

And here’s the same video slowed down even more:

  1. I’m surprised that he lands well in front on his hips. It’s not as far as a heel striker, but it’s noticeable.

It’s because of the slight lean at the waist. Looks great though, especially for a marathon. Excelent mechanics.

Thanks for posting this Pete, awesome video. I think more high speed video of elites needs to be taken like this!

  3. That is SO frigging awesome!!!

  4. This is such awesome video! I’d love to see footage of myself like that; it seems so instructive. I found you via runbulldogrun.com; he (and you) make it seem like you shot it. Will you be there next year? (I’ll be running it then; I had to miss it this year, the first I had qualified, because my first child was born two days earlier.)

      Matt,

Two of my students went down to Boston and shot the video for me. I’m
a college prof, and they’ve been doing footstrike research with me
this year, and they offered to go since I had to teach.

I hope to be running Boston myself next year, but I’ve got some work
cut out for me to BQ – I’m close, but not quite where I need to be
(3:15:59). You can get cameras that will do this level of slow motion
pretty cheap – I’ll try to write a post up with details.

      Pete
